Our new daily routine

Now that Turner is almost 4 weeks old, we have a routine down...we have a schedule :)

I feel we have been very blessed with such a good baby on our first go around with kids. He only cries when he's super hungry or when he's in his crib and is fighting to sleep. I can tell the difference between his cries of wanting to be held or just tired and I need to let him 'cry it out'. Yes..I've already had to do that and it's hard, but it gets better and he can now put himself to sleep in his crib with no fuss...so it's worth it.

I've come to realize that Turner is a morning person...which is not surprising to me since I am a morning person. Our days start around 6 or 7 am with him being hungry (it depends on what time his middle of the night feeding was to what time he will wake up). He usually wakes up 2 hours after his middle of the night feeding...I will usually take him out of his crib and but him in the bassinet (from our pack n play) in our room with his nook to rest for another hour. Sometime he falls back asleep, sometimes not.

Our day feedings are every 2.5 to 3 hours. After the morning feeding, he usually only naps for an hour (at most) and then wants to 'play'. We do tummy time and I sing/read to him. We started going for a walk (since it's cooler in the morning) which him and Mya both love. He will then have his mid-morning feeding. He will nap after and that gives me time to either shower, catch up on blogs, clean or nap myself. He usually won't nap for the whole time because like I said...he's a morning person and that usually is his awake time to explore and learn new things!

The afternoons I have found is when he loves to nap and I get most of my stuff done. Some days we have errands to run and others it's just getting stuff done around the house. Turner is very good in his car seat and sleeps the whole time. It for sure makes it easier to take him places when I need to. Tate usually gets home around 5 or 5:30 when I am doing Turner's 'dinner' feeding. Tate will start to get supper ready while I finish feeding him. Tate will then burp Turner and change his diaper while I finish dinner.

Our night time routine is starting to get consistent and Turner is always ready for bed. Every other day we give him a bath (which we still have to do a sponge bath because his cord STILL hasn't fallen off...doc says that's OK). We get him in his PJ's and Tate feeds him a bottle while I pump.

*Even though I am breastfeeding, Turner was given a bottle in the NICU and our first days home because my milk supply hadn't come in yet and he needed the nutrients. We were OK with supplementing because it was necessary for his health. Tate also had to feed him a bottle when I was in the wedding a few weeks back. Turner has been GREAT at not getting confused between a bottle nipple and my nipple and still breastfeeds just fine. We decided to give him a bottle every night as part of a routine so he knows it's bed time when he gets it and also so that when I do go back to work and he gets bottle more frequently, he will do just fine. All bottle feedings we do now are my breast milk unless there is some emergency that formula needs to be given (like when you are stuck in a car during road construction at his feeding time and he is SCREAMING because he is hungry...formula it is)*

Tate will then burp him and we then swaddle him (he loves those things). We put him in his crib for the night. Tate and I have actually gone to bed at this time also (it's usually 9 pm) because we are tired. Turner falls asleep right away and will sleep for a good 3-4 hours before waking up for his next feeding. There have been a few times where I have had to actually go wake him up to feed him.

Turner has a late night feeding which is usually around midnight and then his middle of the night is between 3-4 am. After his midnight feeding, he will usually wake up 3 hours after that feeding for the next one. At both of these feedings, I put him back in his crib, he's 95% of the time wide awake & has the hiccups when I do this, and he falls asleep on his own. He 'talks' a little bit, but we all fall sleep peacefully. Then...6-7am rolls around and we start it all over again.

First 2 weeks were a bit different...feedings were more often, but the last week and a half have been like this. I have read and am following the 'Baby Wise' book. It's working so far and I hope it continues to work for us. I would highly recommend all expectant or new mama's out there to read that book.

I promise all my posts going forward won't be all about Turner. I am pretty obsessed with him right now and he's really all I think about...but I do have some house updates to post about and we have fun things coming up next month!!!

Single Mom, storms & power outage weekend

This weekend I...

...was a single mom. Tate was gone at a bachelor party and I got to have Turner all to myself. Well...not all to myself because my mom did come help me all weekend. So thankful for her assistance.

...went to Faribault to attend my cousin's graduation party and introduce Turner to my Mom's side of the family. My Aunt's loved holding him and my Grandpa was HILARIOUS. As he was holding Turner, Turner started to fuss a bit (it was his feeding time). My Grandpa blurts out..."will someone throw a tit out here". We all died laughing.

...dealt with the power being out for a good 12+ hours. It was storming Friday night and I was in the middle of feeding Turner and all the sudden, no power. That was lovely. My mom was on her way up and I was really afraid she would get stuck in the storm. We were very fortunate that we didn't have any damage to our house with flooding or trees falling. I've seen pictures throughout the Twin Cities and others were not so lucky and many are still without power. It also was a battle dealing with Mya who is so afraid of storms. She tries to hide her big body in the smallest places...it's hilarious!

...our lil' guy turned 3 weeks old. I can't believe he's been in this world for 3 weeks already. He makes our lives so much better and makes us smile everyday. Last week was a bit rough getting back into our schedule after the weekend, but we are there now and I feel back to normal again.

...and now on this lovely Monday morning, Mya killed a bunny in our yard. I let her out this morning and I didn't see the poor bunny in our yard. Mya caught it and killed it. I had to ask my neighbor to send over her oldest son to bag it for me because I just couldn't do it.

And now we start out a new week full of adventure. It will be a busy week, but I honestly wouldn't have it any other way. I'm not use to this whole being home all day and relaxing, so when there are things scheduled, I love it.

Turner's Birth Story

I absolutely loved reading fellow blogger birth stories and of course, need to document Turner's.

Turner's birthday was the best day of my life but also the scariest. I cry every time I think about it and thank God that we have this healthy baby boy at home with us.

His birth story starts on Saturday, June 1st at about 7:30pm. My sister was in town for 5 days to help out with Mya in case Turner made his arrival. We were playing games and I felt like I started having contractions. Nothing that was too painful, but I was feeling something. After feeling them for an hour, I decided to start timing them. They varied from 7-10 minutes apart and sometimes 5 minutes apart. They were not getting stronger or anything so I wasn't getting too excited!

I went to bed around 10:30 still feeling minor contractions. I woke up at 12:45 in the morning still with contractions and I couldn't sleep. So I decided to watch TV and time them. I tried falling back asleep but I just couldn't. They were getting stronger and closer together. I timed them for a good 3 hours. I decided to wake Tate up @ 4 and let him know that I think it was time we go. He told me to call to make sure. I did and they told us to come in. I decided to shower and get ready. We left the house at 5:35 am on 6/2 to head to the hospital.

We got to the hospital and was checked in and put in a room by 6:15 am. The nurse checked my cervix and I was only at a 3. They decided to monitor me for a few hours to see if I would progress and check my contractions on the machine. During those few hours, Tate & I would walk around trying to see if that would help.

The nurse checked be again @ 8:15 am and I was till only a 3 and my contractions were actually growing farther apart verses getting closer together. The nurse got the doctor who came in to give us a few options. We could either go home and just 'wait it out' or he felt that since I was already dilated to a 3 and that I was having good contractions up until that point, that they could start me on some Pitocin to see if that would help.

After the doctor gave me those options, he just waited right there for my decision. I really didn't have time to think or talk it over with Tate...so I said let's do this. They started me on the smallest dose of Pitocin and that definitely got things moving. Contractions were picking up and getting much stronger. The doctor broke my water at 10:30 am. Since my contractions were so strong, they decided to turn off the Pitocin to see how I did on my own. Sure enough, the contractions kept coming and kept getting stronger.

I seriously thought I was going to die from those contractions. They were the most painful thing I have ever felt in my life. My nurse knew that I really wanted to make it to 7 cm dilated before requesting an epidural. She checked me at 11:30 am and I was only at a 5. I seriously thought that there was no way I could make it 5 more cm with these contractions. She tried to talk me into other pain meds to help, I refused. I waited it out for another 30 minutes before finally caving in and requesting the epidural. The epidural was in and started working at 12:30 pm. I seriously didn't feel a thing when I got it because I kept having contractions during that time and those were so painful and I had concentrate so I wouldn't move. I was dilated to a 6 by the time the epidural was in.

I was in heaven then. I took a nap and we watched more Big Bang Theory. The nurse checked me a few hours later and I was already dilated to 9.75. It wasn't a full 10 because Turner's head was sitting on my cervix weird. We just needed to keep waiting until I was a full 10. They decided to turn the Pitocin back on to see if that would help.

They checked me again a few hours later, and still was stuck @ 9.75 cm dilated. Turner's head wasn't budging so the doctor decided to go up there and try to move it himself. Thank gosh I had the epidural because I didn't feel a thing. The doctor tried and hoped that whatever he did, would move him and put me @ a 10.

7 pm rolled around it was time for a shift change of nurses and doctors. During this time, I learned that I had developed a fever and that Turner would have to go to the NICU when we was delivered because he would have to be on antibiotics because they were afraid this fever would pass on to him. I started crying because they were going to take my baby away from me. I was so sad and couldn't help but just keep crying. Tate was great and kept reassuring me that everything would be ok.

They new nurse checked me and I was finally at a 10 and they were going to wait for his head to move down on his own for a bit. The new doctor came in and let me know that she was going to deliver a few other babies and would be back. The nurse checked be again around 8:45 pm and his head was 'right there' and I was ready to push. WOOHOOO...I was elated.

I started pushing at 9:12 pm. I honestly thought since he was already so far down there, I wouldn't have to push for very long. Well I was wrong. When I was still pushing at 10:45 pm, I asked if his birthday was going to be today or tomorrow. The nurse was certain that it would be today.

Tate always thought he would stay up by my head and not look down there, but he was curious and watched everything. I actually thought I wouldn't want a mirror either, but I decided to have one to see. They were telling me how great I was doing, but when you get the mirror and only see a tiny part of his head...I thought, OMG...I've got so far to go yet.

While pushing, the doctor told me that it was a very tight space and that I would probably tear. She said she could do an episiotomy when I push to help make the space bigger for him to come out. She mentioned that if she didn't, I would tear on my own and that it could be another 30 minutes of pushing. I decided she could do it. I had them move the mirror so I didn't see her actually cut me. On that push where she did the episiotomy, our lil' guy came sliding out.

After 2 hours and 20 minutes of pushing, Turner came into this world at 11:33 pm. They instantly put him on my chest and he was blue and wasn't breathing. Luckily, the NICU team was in there due to my fever and took him to wipe him off and get him breathing. They were just a few feet from me on the warming table but I couldn't see Turner because the nurses were standing in the way. Tate was there watching the NICU team try to get him to breathe. They had to use a tool to breathe for him. Tate said it was scariest thing he has ever seen. After I heard him cry...it was the best thing ever.

After he was swaddled in his blanket, they brought him back over to me. I was only able to hold him for about 30 seconds and they took him away to go to the NICU because he still wasn't doing good. Tate went with Turner. I told him to keep his phone right there and to call me with an update. I couldn't obviously move due to the epidural and I was in the process of delivering the placenta and being stitched back up.

A lil' after midnight, everyone was out of my room and I was to rest before being moved to the post partum room. This is when I broke down and just bawled. I couldn't stop crying. I was left alone in this room without my baby or my husband. I just had the best day of my life...my son was born and then the saddest because I didn't know if he was ok. I finally called Tate and he didn't answer which made me cry even more. I waited 10 more minutes and then called him again. He answered. He said he didn't answer before because Turner was screaming at the top of his lungs. He was pissed from being taken from his mama and from being poked with needles and IV's. They were giving him chest x-rays to make sure there was nothing in his lungs.

My awesome nurse came back to my room around 1 am and saw me crying. She asked if I would like to be moved now and go to the NICU to see him. I of course said yes. Another nurse moved all of our belongings to our post-partum room and my nurse wheeled me to the NICU to see Turner.

When I got there, I couldn't stop crying again. Seeing him hooked up to so Everything much stuff, I hated it. I knew this is what was best for him, but I wanted him to be with me in my room. The chest x-rays showed nothing in his lungs which was good. He was still breathing funny, which they hoped would clear up the next day so we could start breast feeding. They also did the blood culture to see if he had any infection from my fever. We would get those results after 48 hours.

Tate was planning on staying with Turner the whole time and I had to stay in my room. I was still going to be hooked up to an IV and being given antibiotics for my fever...which had now gone away after delivery, but for precaution, the antibiotics had to be given. I was finally back in my room by 3:30 am. I only slept 3 hours before waking back up to go back to the NICU to see my boys.

I was discharged on my birthday, June 4th but Turner wasn't going to be discharged until June 5th. So Tate and I stayed in the NICU with him the last night. Even then, they weren't 100% if they were going to discharge him because he lost a lot of weight and didn't have enough wet diapers after being removed from the IV. We had to supplement some formula to get him his nutrients, and that helped. Thank gosh it did not interfere with his breastfeeding abilities.

June 2, 2013 is a day I will NEVER forget. I am so thankful that our lil' guy is now healthy and doing so well. It was a long and scary delivery. I think the fever was a blessing in disguise because who knows what would have happened if the NICU team wasn't there right away to get him to breathe. He was by far the healthiest baby in the NICU. I am so glad we delivered at the hospital that we did since Children's Hospital is right across the hallway from labor and delivery. Everything worked out like it was supposed to....just a few hiccups along the way.

His massive cone head that went back to normal within' 24 hours!

His swollen face from the long labor

Katie's Wedding Weekend

We made it to St. Cloud for a fun wedding weekend and survived with our 2 week old!!! To say we were exhausted when we got back yesterday is an understatement.

The drive up was good until we hit road construction and was stuck going less than 5 mph for a good 30-40 minutes. Oh...it also sucks when your stuck with an infant which has a feeding schedule. Luckily, we had formula just in case and thank gosh we did. We got to the hotel and only arrived to the rehearsal 10 minutes late...which I consider a success!!

After the rehearsal @ the church, we headed to the Groom's parents house for the Groom's dinner. They had a nice set up in the backyard. The weather was beautiful.

We only stayed until a bit after nine and then headed back to the hotel. We brought the bassinet that is from Turner's pack n play for him to sleep in. It worked out really well. I got some decent sleep in between his feedings.

I had my hair appointment the next morning at 9:45 at the Bride's home. Tate was going to be on full daddy duty all day. I brought my pump along so I could pump throughout the day and give the milk to Tate for him to feed Turner.

The day turned out beautiful for Katie's big day. It was sunny and in the 80's all day. We got beautiful pictures @ the park and baseball field.

First Look

Turner did great throughout the day for daddy! I missed him of course...but new he was in great hands. I'm so lucky that Turner has the best Dad!!!

Turner in his wedding best :)

It was also good to see friends we hadn't seen in awhile and they were able to meet Turner. My bestie, Amanda came with the twins. They are getting so big and cuter by the day.

Maysen making funny faces...so adorable!!!

We stayed for the first few dances @ the reception, then it was time to feed Turner again and I was exhausted! The day was very fun...but I was ready to hit the sack!

Trying to make up for missing him all day!!!

My lil' family!!! xoxo...love them both so much!!!

We ended the weekend with a great Father's Day for Tate. We relaxed, had salmon for dinner and he opened his gift from Turner. It was great to be back. Turner even slept in his crib for the night.

Happy Father's Day to these 2 great Dad's!!!!

This crazy week

Hi...I'm here...I'm alive!!!

Tate went back to work on Monday after having a week off and I've been trying to get lots of things done. It's crazy how much running around I have done since Tate went to work. I've had to go somewhere everyday this week and this weekend we are off to St. Cloud for a wedding of a dear friend. I'm actually in the wedding...so that should be interesting figuring it all out with feeding Turner and doing my bridesmaid duties!

So this week...well let's see how it's been!

Monday was my first day alone with him and right away in the morning I had to go to my dress alterations appointment. Turner came with. Luckily, that was my only errand that day!

My lil' guy all 'milk drunk'!!!!

Tuesday I had to make a few runs to Target and the doctor! Thank gosh Target is very close and I usually can get there, shopping done and home within' an hour time.

On Wednesday, Tate and I dropped my car off in the morning to get an oil change. Turner and I then had visitors that day. My friends were nice enough to take me to my car to pick up later that day. Then a bank run and off to pick up my bridesmaid dress.

He's all smiles hanging out with his mama :)

Thursday (today)...we had to bring Mya to the vet this morning. She had been starting to rub her butt on the carpet (which she never does). I knew something was wrong. Either anal glands needed to be expressed or she had worms. Thank gosh...it was just her anal glands.

Playtime!!!

Friday we will be heading out of town in the afternoon and will be gone until Sunday.

And during this week...
- Turner slept the whole time in his car seat
- We have him on a great feeding schedule of every 2-3 hours during the day and every 3-4 hours at night.
- As I am typing this...he is taking his 2nd nap today IN HIS CRIB! We hope to transition him to crib sleeping in the next couple weeks so we are starting with naps. Each day gets better with it.
- Breastfeeding is going great. He latches on and gets his tummy full. I'm been pumping after a few feedings during the day so I can get some stored up for Tate this weekend in case Tate needs to feed him and I am not around.
- Tate and I swear he is the best baby ever. He only cries when hungry and for a few minute when I first put him in his crib. We feel so blessed. Life has been crazy busy this week and I am thankful that next week it will slow down.

I've also been soaking in every moment with my lil' guy...he seriously has stolen my heart in a BIG way!!!!

I am also hoping to get his birth story up here soon because it was definitely and unforgettable journey that day.

I could stare @ him all day!!!
