Numbers...Money...Debt

Let's talk about a few of my favorite things today...

There is someone that Tate and I invited into our home almost a year ago. I haven't really spoke about it because it can be a touchy subject for many while others talk about it freely. Tate and I do not talk about it freely. We actually kind of kept it to ourselves and if people asked about it...that is when we would talk about it.

I'm ready to share and talk about it for a few reasons. One...because this is my blog for documenting our life and all the great and not so great things that happen and Two...because I would like to 'pay it forward' and hope that someone else out there can benefit from it.

This 'someone' that we invited into our home was Dave Ramsey. For those that don't know, Dave is what we would consider our financial advisor even though we have never met him (I did call and talk to him on his radio show...loved that). I was introduced to Dave Ramsey about 2 years ago. I was given one of his books and didn't really read it and gave it back to the person that gave it back. Then about a year ago, I once again was introduced to Dave through a co-worker who was going through one of his classes and I decided to check him out. I am so glad I did.

A few things to keep in mind...

1. I have ALWAYS been a numbers person. My junior year in high school I knew I wanted to be an accountant...so playing around with numbers and doing math is my kind of fun :)

2. Tate and I had been already doing a budget and trying to pay down our debt before we were introduced to Dave Ramsey, but after learning more...we decided to accelerate it!

3. We didn't have a HUGE amount of consumer debt to begin with. Tate had scholarships for college (football) and took out student loans for 'spending' money (bad idea) and I paid towards my student loan all through college because I worked over 30 hour weeks in college. By the time we started Dave's plan, my student loan was already paid off, Tate's was already chopped in 1/2, we had a loan on Tate's car that was not too high and a few minor credit card purchases. I would say we had only had about $20k in consumer debt, if that.

Instead of actually going to one of Dave's Financial Peace classes, Tate and I decided to read some of Dave's books. The book that I read that really spelled everything out for us was 'Total Money Makeover'. I love this book and am actually considering reading again to just refresh myself with everything.

What I like about Dave...is he has 7 simple baby steps to follow. I really liked that it was simple and laid out for you. All we had to do was follow these baby steps (and take on other habits he recommends) and we would be on our way to financial freedom. Dave is all about being debt free...which we are too. We have no desire to ever take out a loan ever again on anything! Not a car, no interest free financing credit cards, nothing. If we can't afford to pay cash, then we can't afford it.

Dave's 7 Baby Steps

Baby Step 1: Save $1,000 into an emergency fund
This is for emergency use only while you pay down your consumer debt.

Baby Step 2: Pay off all consumer debt
This includes every debt you have except the house. All credit cards, student loans, cars, etc. Pay off the smallest first and work up to the largest. Dave calls this the debt snowball.

Baby Step 3: Save 3-6 months of expenses into an emergency fund
Once you are debt free except your house, save 3-6 months of your expenses into a general savings account. Don't put it in a CD or something else that the money would be restricted. If an emergency happened (whether that would be the loss of a job, medical, etc.) you would need to get to the money right away.

Baby Step 4: Contribute 15% of your gross pay to retirement
Dave recommends to put your retirement saving on hold while you pay down your debt. Once that is paid off and you have your emergency fund, contributing 15% should not be a problem or feel like such a significant amount.

Baby Step 5: College savings
Dave is big on teaching your children good money habits. There are ways to get through college without having to take out loans. He actually has a whole program on just that. This step is to start putting away money for college savings for your kids in a 529 plan or education savings plan.

Baby Step 6: Pay off your mortgage debt
Imagine having your house paid! Does that not bring a smile and joy to your face?! We just think of how that money could go to better use than giving a HUGE amount of interest to a bank or mortgage company. Every year when I see how much principal vs interest we have paid on our house...I cringe.

*Baby steps 4-6 can be done in conjunction with each other*

Baby Step 7: Build wealth and give
Keep contributing to mutual funds, retirement and give

Since we already did a budget and were paying down debt, you may wonder what we did different once we took on Dave's plan.

What we did & continue to do...

1. We started the baby steps. We follow them just like the say and in that order.

2. We started Dave's envelope system of cash for food, gas, personal and recreation. I use an excel sheet that I found online that uses Dave's plan and the amount we budget every month for those 4 categories get taken out the bank account every month and put into a respective envelope. We only spend what is in that envelope each month for those categories. I was hesitant to start this, but it's working great for us.

3. I listen to Dave's radio show everyday at work from 1-4. It makes my afternoon go by really fast and I learn so much information from other peoples stories. I also love the phone calls of the people that are on baby step 7 or even just finished baby step 2.

4. Have monthly budget meetings. Tate and I sit down once a month to go over the budget for the next month. It's awesome to do this together. We both are on the same page when it comes to our finances and have the same goals. We look forward to our future even more now...

Tate and I hit a HUGE milestone in our finance journey...we just finished BABY STEP 3 and we can't believe how much this plan works for us and how happy we are that we are following it. We currently have no consumer debt, have 3-6 months worth of expenses sitting in a regular savings account and I have started to contribute to my 401k at work. We are just beyond thankful and blessed that we found this!!!! This also means we hit one of our 2013 goals...and we did it 1.5 months ahead of schedule!!!!
Some of Dave's daily tips that he puts on Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest

Since we are currently expecting, Dave recommends putting the baby steps on hold until mom and baby are home from hospital healthy and well. He advises to just to save save save until that day and then use that savings to put towards whichever baby step you are on.

We plan to just keep saving until I head back to work from maternity leave. At that point, we will be contributing the full 15% to retirement funds, contributing money to a college savings for our lil' guy and then putting extra money each month towards the mortgage (baby steps 4-6). Considering we just bought our house 3.5 years ago, we have a big mortgage to pay down and it will take awhile.

This plan is working for us and it may work for you. I was not paid or asked to talk about this. I just love doing this stuff and if this is working for us, it may work for you. There are many people all over that are using Dave's plan and your church just may be offering his class.

*The average American has more consumer debt then we did and takes about 18-24 months to pay off with Dave's plan. I feel lucky we had already been making some smart decisions before being introduced and it didn't take long to get to the end of baby step 3.

To really follow Dave's system, I would definitly recommend reading his book or attending a Financial Peace class.

It really does take sacrafice, discipline and hard work. But the reward is amazing!

Week 25

Baby W this week…
-He now knows which way is up and which way is down
-Growing more fat everyday (so it's totally ok to eat a donut...right) and hair

Size of the baby?
He's growing by leaps and bounds....this week he is the size of Cauliflower!

Total Weight Gain/Loss?
+15lbs @ my 24 week appt. I've decided I am not too concerned with what I gain as long as I don't feel like it looks like a tremendous amount. What I mean is that I could gain over 40 lbs but yet nothing fills out except my belly. I really don't have control over that. I am still eating the same as I did before. I feel like nothing else is getting bigger on me besides my belly and a tad in the boobs. No chubby face, hips have not filled out, ass is not getting bigger, legs are still sticks (not by choice, runs in my family), etc.

Maternity Clothes?
I am still managing to wear both my normal clothes and maternity. I have a few flowy dresses that I wear and still wear the belly band with a hair tie to hold my pants up for non-maternity.

Stretch Marks?
I check every morning...which may be the worst time to check because I have mini-panic attacks that I see some when actually they are just sleeping marks.

Best Moments?
Reading to our little guy with the books we have already received and watching Tate talk to him. It is so adorable when he just sits next to me and starts talking to him and kissing my belly.

Movement?
He is still a moving machine. It's very distracting when I am at work in a meeting and he just starts 'dancing' :)

Food Cravings?
I feel like my food cravings are subsiding.

Anything making you queasy or sick?
Raw meat!

What I miss?
Bending over to pick things up. Very difficult these days. I also miss not being so emotional...I cried over the kitchen table being dusty and not clean!

Nausea/Vomiting?
None

Symptoms?
Still get cramps in my calves about twice a week. I also get bloody nose and my gums bleed a lot when I floss. One thing that they say could happen doing pregnancy is significant hair growth. But I feel like I have had the complete opposite. I feel like my hair is not growing like it use to...anywhere on my body. Weird...but I'll take not having to shave as often :)

Labor Signs?
Still too early for this!

Gender?
BOY

Belly Button In or Out?
Slowing making it's way out

Wedding Rings On or Off?
So on...

Sleep?
Sleeping just fine...I wonder if this can last the whole pregnancy?!?! I sure hope so!

What I am looking forward to?
Tate will be done coaching wrestling after this week. They have one kid going to state and I look forward to having him home more (even though I am not home more due to tax season). His assistance will be very helpful in getting things done before the big day that our lil' guy arrives.

Week 24

Baby W this week…
-brain is growing quickly and taste buds are continuing to develop
-lungs are growing 'branches' of the respiratory 'tree'

Size of the baby?
Baby is the size of a cantaloupe...WOW, he's getting big!

My doctor measured my belly this week...I am measuring @ 26 weeks. She is not worried since I am within 3cm of the 24 week measurement. She said I am someone with a small torso, so she is not surprised. I would rather be measuring big then small if I had to choose. At least I know he's in there growing and getting big :)

Total Weight Gain/Loss?
Well I just had my 24 week appointment...I have a gained a total of 15lbs and my doctor is super happy with that! If my doctor is happy, I feel great and baby is good...then 15lbs don't mean anything but a number!

Maternity Clothes?
I am good on buying things for these colder months for now. I purchased a pair of skinny jeans from Gap for about $18 that I am pretty happy with. I look forward to spring arriving and I can wear dresses!

Stretch Marks?
None..zero...zippo...nada

Best Moments?
This is a 'best moment' in my book...because I love love love saving money! Target had a big sale a few weeks ago on baby stuff. Well the breast pump I wanted was on sale so I snatched it up because I didn't want to not get it on sale. Well after calling my insurance and learning that they will cover an ELECTRIC breast pump 100% as long as my physician prescribed it I was excited. So I talked to my doctor about it and she will prescribe me one while I am @ the hospital and have it brought to me and everything. The best part...it's the same pump I bought and wanted. I am BEYOND excited to be saving over $200 on this item!

Movement?
He is moving around like crazy! I love it. Tate finally saw it when I lifted up my shirt. I wouldn't expect anything less from the lil' guy on the movement since his mama is always moving and can not sit still! :)

Food Cravings?
Oh the norm...mac & cheese, milk and anything that is salty

Anything making you queasy or sick?
When I cooked Tate's pot roast last weekend...all the fat that came off it made me want to hurl all over it! So gross!!!

What I miss?
How about what I won't miss...people staring at me. The place I get it the most is @ the gym. Not sure if they can believe a pregnant woman is working out...but it's really awkward and I can't imagine what it will be like the farther along I get.

Nausea/Vomiting?
None

Symptoms?
The back aches have started a bit.

Labor Signs?
Still too early for this!

Gender?
BOY

Belly Button In or Out?
It's bustin' out!

Wedding Rings On or Off?
So on...

Sleep?
Great. Still no interruptions! Feeling very lucky!

What I am looking forward to?
Tate is almost done with coaching...and I am really excited about that. Even though I will still be working long hours for tax season, I am excited for him to be around to get stuff done that I can't! Many house projects we would like to get finished before the lil' guy arrives!

This Weekend I...

...once again had a 1 day weekend and got a whole lot accomplished!!!

...picked 3 of the 6 fabrics that my Grandma will need to make a quilt for Baby Boy W. I spent a ridiculous amount of time @ JoAnn's...but was happy to at least pick out some fabric that will be incorporated into his nursery.

...on Sunday...I braved the snow storm for a bit to get to the gym and grocery store. After I got home, I got right to work on checking things off my list.

...painted the dresser that we will be using in the nursery. It is a dresser that I had growing up. My dad made each one of us a dresser when we were kids. I decided to paint it and do something fun with it! You wont' be able to see it until I am finished...but for now, the whole dresser is painted. I also found inside the date my dad finished making it. It was really neat since I was on the phone with him when I found the date. It is kind of crazy that it's 29 years to (almost) the day. I plan to add to it...the date I transformed it.

...also painted a few other items that will be going on the wall in the nursery! Once again, you will have to wait to see until I am finished :)

...painted the trim in our bathroom...finally! I add blogged about remodeling bathroom#1 awhile back and mentioned that we were 90% finished. Well, I finished one more item. We will need to paint the trim around the doors once we get white doors to replace the golden oak.

The top photo is 'before' photo. Only primed and you can see the nail holes. The bottom photo shows the trim done being painted. As you can see...some of the paint came off the wall when I removed the tape. Not cool...but no big deal. Will need to do a touch up soon!

...made all the dinners for the week. I found a 'system' during this tax season that has been working. I make all the dinners for the week on Sunday. Since I work late every night...I like to have something to bring to work and something in the fridge for Tate to warm up. I usually make a big batch of one thing (lasagna last week, pot roast with carrots & potatoes this week) and then a few other items for the rest of the nights. The big batch item is usually for at least 2 nights of that week.

My big batch of pot roast & veggies...that I will NOT be eating! I don't eat that kind of meat and certainly don't eat cooked veggies! Tate is very excited to have this a few nights this week.

...ended it on the couch with Tate & I watching the Grammy Awards. Relaxing before another long week ahead...but ready to take it on. 3 weeks down, 9 to go of tax season!

Week 23

I got Fergie stuck in my head...can you tell?!!?

Baby W this week…
-blood vessels in Baby W's lungs are developing to prepare for breathing
-hearing has become more keen

Size of the baby?
Baby is the size of a grapefruit and now I really want one!!

Total Weight Gain/Loss?
+10lbs at my 20 week appointment

Maternity Clothes?
I snagged a few items from H&M for $10 a piece. That dress in the picture is from the H&M maternity line and I also got 2 pairs of skinny pants...black & hot red! My friend, Jen, also gave me her tub FULL of maternity clothes! So thankful!!!

Stretch Marks?
Counting my lucky stars that I still don't have any

Best Moments?
Besides Tate finally feeling him move (see that in 'movement' below), it's seeing friends and having them comment how I am a cute pregnant lady and that I am all belly! They say my belly looks fake since I don't look pregnant anywhere else...well it's not and thank you :) I thought for sure my face would chub up since in college, I had a chubbier face from putting on extra weight. Well, we still have 17 weeks to go so I guess there is still time for that :)

Movement?
He has been moving like crazy! Tate FINALLY felt him on 2/2/13. It was almost 6 am (yes on Saturday, we both had to work) and we were still laying in bed. I told Tate that he was kicking/punching if he wanted to try to feel. He did and he felt him. On my actual week 23 mark (2/4/13), our lil' guy was going crazy and moving so much all day. When we went to bed I was afraid I wouldn't be able to fall asleep because he was moving so much. Tate felt it again and this time he didn't question any of the movements, he knew that it was our baby and felt it for awhile. Love these moments!

Food Cravings?
Tate has it down now that no matter what, after church on Sunday, mac & cheese will be for lunch :)

Anything making you queasy or sick?
Raw meat! Tate and I went grocery shopping and I wanted to vomit when I had to go pick up a few packages of chicken. So gross looking.

What I miss?
Bending over with ease :) It's a bit difficult these days and I know it's only going to get worse.

Nausea/Vomiting?
None

Symptoms?
Crazy movement, uncomfortable moments after I stuff my face (Super Bowl Sunday), and a growing belly :)

Labor Signs?
Still too early for this!

Gender?
BOY

Belly Button In or Out?
Neither?!? It's flat.

Wedding Rings On or Off?
Still on and not got getting any tighter...so big plus :)

Sleep?
I still am getting about 7 hours of uninterrupted sleep. This past week I was getting crazy cramps in my calves though....not fun or cool! Hurt so bad and I was have to quickly get out of bed to walk around to ease the pain and it's not easy getting out of bed when I am wrapped in my pregnancy pillow!

What I am looking forward to?
I am looking forward to working more on the nursery this weekend. Besides both of us working on Saturday, Sunday is wide open to get things done around the house and I look forward to this!

Goals...how are they going?

So I made some 2013 goals when the new year rolled around....there are a few that were to start right away and some that would take some time. Let's see how I am doing with the ones that I started right away and can do everyday...

Watch less TV
One of my goals was to watch less TV. Well...I would have to say that is definitely happening because I have no time to watch any TV except on Sundays. I worked 67 hours last week and probably will be working that same amount during this whole tax season and if I want any sleep....TV will just need to be cut out!

Make work lunches the night before
I really wanted to start making our work lunches the night before because it saves so much time for me in the morning. I have actually made our lunches every night for the month of January and it is amazing. My mornings seem a lot more relaxed...all I need to do is get ready and enjoy my breakfast.

 Meet my pregnancy goal
I have a goal to walk/jog/elliptical 350 miles during my pregnancy. I started it the day I found out I was pregnant which was right around 5 weeks. 10 miles a week is what I should average to meet that goal. Well...I def logged many miles this January! As of yesterday, I am at a total of 176.53 miles. I still plan to log miles tonight and Sunday. I am right on pace (actually a bit ahead) which makes me very happy!

Become more organized
With a baby coming...becoming organized is essential! I feel like I have already organized so much and there is still more to do! The nursery closet is empty and ready to be filled with many baby items! I have utilized other space in the house that was sitting empty. Our house has lots of storage space and I love that we are not using it properly :)

How are you doing with your resolutions or goals?
